FAQ’s
What age can kids start karate?
At Rikido Shotokan Karate, children can start training from age 5 and up in our dedicated Karate Cub program. This beginner-friendly class focuses on building coordination, focus, and confidence through fun, age-appropriate drills. Whether your child is new to martial arts or full of energy after school, our kids karate classes in Adelaide are the perfect introduction to the discipline of Shotokan karate.
What should I or my child wear to their first class?
For their first karate class, your child can wear comfortable activewear, such as a T-shirt and shorts or leggings. Once they’ve joined officially, we’ll provide information about purchasing a karate gi (uniform). We train barefoot, so no special footwear is needed. Our karate classes for kids are designed to be welcoming and low-pressure, so they can ease in comfortably.
How is Shotokan karate different from other styles?
Shotokan karate is a traditional Japanese martial art known for its powerful stances, clean techniques, and strong focus on discipline and character development. Unlike some other martial arts, Shotokan places equal emphasis on kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). At Rikido Karate, we teach authentic Shotokan karate in Adelaide with a focus on precision, respect, and lifelong skills for kids and adults alike.
Is karate safe for children?
Yes—karate is a safe and structured activity for children when taught by experienced instructors. At Rikido Shotokan Karate, we prioritise safety, supervision, and proper technique at all times. Our classes are tailored to your child’s age and skill level, helping them build confidence, balance, and strength in a controlled environment. We keep our kids karate classes fun, supportive, and engaging while reinforcing important values like respect and self-control
